Simon Bolivar
Simon Bolivar, also known as The Liberator, was one of South America’s greatest generals. He was born on July 24, 1783 in Venezuela. After the death of his parents at a young age, Simon Bolivar traveled around Europe and eventually returned Venezuela to join a group of patriots who proclaimed independence from Spain. He took command, later on, of a patriot army and recaptured Caracas from Spain in 1813. He was then forced by the Spaniards to retreat to present day Colombia where he took command of the army and captured Bogota in 1814. In 1816, Bolivar took Angostura and became dictator. Then, Bolivar organized the republic of Colombia and became its first president on December 17, 1819. Later, Bolivar successfully added on many territories to the republic including Ecuador and Peru. Finally, one of Bolivar’s biggest accomplishments was the constitution of Bolivia after the country’s independence from Spain (bolivarmo.com).
